Digital Sisterhood Leadership Project Profile – Alexis Pauline Gumbs

Meet Digital Sisterhood Leader Alexis Pauline Gumbs, a queer Black feminist troublemaker from Durham, North Carolina. Alexis Pauline established the Eternal Summer of the Black Feminist Mind educational program and co-created the Mobile Homecoming experiential archive, amplifying generations of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Black brilliance.

The Digital Sisterhood Network wishes Alexis Pauline a very happy belated birthday (June 12)! Enjoy your big 3-0!

1) How can people find you online?

2) Why did you start using social media?

I started using social media back in the days of Black Planet, but someone else created my account and my name. I think I got to college at just the moment when people decided it was easier to chat on instant messenger than to walk down the hall.  I really amped up my digital media use when I started working with UBUNTU, a women of color survivor led coalition to end gendered violence, and realized that the skills we were building and especially the publications and curricula we were creating could be useful to folks everywhere.

3) What has social media allowed you to do in your life (personal, professional, business, nonprofit, community)?

New media has infused my life with inspiring relationships across space and the ability to have a global impact. BrokenBeautiful Press and Eternal Summer of the Black Feminist Mind have reached folks from Chennai, India to Nairobi, Kenya. That means it keeps me accountable and inspired in a way that supplements the inspiration I get from my amazing local community. It has also allowed me to leverage financial support from a larger based of like-minded people than I would have access to locally. Social media has also allowed me to be as queer and multiple as I am with input and output from millions of other geniuses.

4) In her 2011 Digital Women: from geeks to mainstream presentation that was given at the WIFT International Women Conference for Digital Women, Dr. Taly Weiss, a social psychologist and CEO/Founder of Trendspotting, concluded that “women are dominant digital users – they breathe and live digital.”  Dr. Weiss’ conclusion echoes BlogHer’s 2011 Social Media Matters Study findings.  They include 87 million women (18 to 76 years old) are now online, 69 million women use social media weekly, 80 million women use social media monthly, and 55 million women read blogs monthly. These facts illustrate the power and presence women have in the digital space. Now that’s Digital Sisterhood!

How has social media helped you carve out leadership roles as you interact online and offline?

Social media has definitely made some of the most exciting collaborations in my life possible. Co-creating the SPEAK CD with other radical women of color bloggers is one such experience. I don’t think I would have come to the idea to create a spoken word CD on my own, ever, but as a collective we were able to create something miraculous and bigger than the interrelated work we were each doing. I also think that social media allowed me to find validation at times when many people directly around me may not have been thinking about the same issues.  And don’t get me started on how many Google documents I’ve used in my collaborative editing, writing, dreaming, and organizing processes with other folks.

5) Social media has helped women become Digital Sisterhood Leaders, ambassadors of social expression who share what they are passionate about online.  In her upcoming book, Digital Sisterhood: Fierce Living Online for 25 Years (Fall 2012), Ananda Leeke, founder of the Digital Sisterhood Network, writes, “Without even knowing it, women have become Digital Sisterhood Leaders as they use their social media platforms to advocate causes; to build communities; to create apps, art, books, businesses, products, publications, services, tools, and webisodes; to curate content; to educate and inform; to give voice to their thoughts as subject matter experts, thought leaders, and brand ambassadors; to share information and experiences; to explore and experiment with new technologies as early adopters and trendsetters; to engage in social good; to influence others with their lifestyles and personal interests; to inspire and motivate; to mentor; to network; to tell their personal stories; and to promote and celebrate the expertise, gifts, and talents of others.  Based on my online and offline interactions, I have identified 12 key leadership roles they play: advocate, community builder, creator, curator, educator, influencer, mentor, motivator, promoter, social do gooder, storyteller, and thought leader.”

What other types of leadership roles do women play in social media?

Sounds like you’ve got ’em.  12 is a good number to stick with!

6) What types of leadership roles do you play in social media?

I think (like the zodiac) all 12 of the roles you mentioned describe some of the work that I do. I think different social media outlets that I have serve these different purposes. I channel my energy in each of these ways on different days. I see it as my specific responsibility to demonstrate a joyful, love-filled dynamic Black feminist ethic of transformation in action via social media. That’s what I’m advocating. That’s the community I’m building. Those are the spaces I’m curating and influencing. And the stories I’m telling etc. etc. etc.

7) What lessons have you learned as a leader in the digital space?

I’ve learned that relationships are the most important resource for making miracles happen.

8) Do you have plans to expand your leadership roles in the digital space? If so, what are they?

I definitely want to play more of a creator role, which I think requires learning a lot more about the technical and coding side than I know now. I love all of the languages that I know now and I think learning and analyzing computer languages will be a new source of poetic nerdly joy!

9) Who are your favorite social media women leaders and why?

A lot of them are on this list. There are actually too many to name…  Renina Jarmon, Moya Bailey, Sydette Harry, Mamita Mala, Firefly, Reina Gossett Sudy at My Ecdysis, Mai’a Williams at Guerilla Mama Medicine, Summer M. at Black Youth Project, the folks at Feminist Wire, Crunk Feminist Collective, Hermana Resist and Flip Flopping Joy.  I am probably missing some people, but I have so many favorites because these are the people I love to work with all the time, who make me a better person by sharing ideas, laughter, love, support, friendship and the work using our brilliance as women of color to transform this world into a loving accountable joyful place to live!

10) Share three ways women can use social media to define and express their personal leadership brand.

  • Tell people how much you love them in public, often.
  • Lift up the ancestors who have made it possible for you to exist and ensure their existence in the hearts of everyone who you touch.
  • Build deep and powerful friendships with people who share your vision.

“CyberFeminists” — A Feminism Online Project Guest Blog Post by Rhonesha Byng, Founder of HerAgenda.com

85% of the PR industry is female, however 80% of the top management are men, according to a report, and reports further show the men’s salaries are higher.  Amongst the Fortune 500 companies, women CEOs run only 13 of them, and before 1996  a woman CEO was nonexistent.  The decision-making positions are a key area where women fail to be represented.

But as a 17 year old girl, attending a NABFEME meeting four years ago, the picture that those numbers paint weren’t on my radar.  I was blind to the reason why an organization called the National Association of Black Female Execs in Music and Entertainment was needed.  I was just excited that there was no age limit and in awe of being in a room full of amazing women who had in my eyes conquered the world.  They were entrepreneurs, and executives at record labels representing clients I’d only dreamed of knowing.  Hearing their stories made their path to success vivid and real.  The intimate feeling of the room made it seem as though they were my big sisters telling me– this is how I did it, and you can do it to — but when you do it make sure you take it to the next level.

Many young women do not have exposure to proper examples of power women to ever gain the capacity to dream big.  Just in time for Women’s History month, HerAgenda.com is highlighting the stories of inspirational women who make moves behind the scenes.  To start I am featuring a group of up and coming power women who embody the No one Ever Slows Her Agenda mentality.  This campaign simultaneously serves as a catalyst for a mini-fundraiser whose goal is to fund the launch of the new version of HerAgenda.com.

To push the agenda I joined forces with clothing company Triple L Society to create shirts branded with the motto to utilize in the campaign and sell to raise funds for the relaunch.  Stemming from the acronym N.E.S.H.A.–No one Ever Slows Her Agenda started out as my personal motto but now it’s my mission to universalize that motto to young women across the world.  To not let anyone or anything stand in the way of your goals is the message of the motto.  The resources are out there, and it’s up to you to find them and make your agenda a priority.

The presence of women in powerful positions continues to shock and awe, further solidifying women as the “other” when it comes to positions of power.  The next generation of women is shifting these attitudes.  Just as second wave feminists used the tools they found most effective during their time (protests, petitions, boycotting); a new generation of feminists dubbed by academics as “cyberfeminists” are taking advantage of the tool they believe can serve as a catalyst for change in the years to come: the Internet.

Utilizing such aids as mentorship, personal empowerment, and advances in cyberfeminist movements, women are mobilizing and empowering themselves to ultimately break down the patriarchal structures of society and claim their power.

I want to translate the intimate feeling I experienced at that NABFEME event years ago into an online space.  From this concept emerged the development of HerAgenda.com serving as a space to encourage young women to embrace the motto of No one Ever Slows Her Agenda and to utilize the inspirational real life journeys of power women to motivate and encourage users to not only dream big but do big.

Author Marita Golden on Feminism & Its Importance in African American Women’s Lives

I had the pleasure of interviewing author Marita Golden (one of my writing mentors) about feminism for the Digital Sisterhood Network’s Feminism Online Project.  We recorded the video after participating in the WOMANIFESTING in Action event held on March 19, 2011, at Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, DC.

What do you think about Marita’s views?

Recap of Digital Sisterhood Radio’s Feminism Online Project Interview with Professor Shayne Lee, “The Prince of 3rd Wave Feminism”

Last night the Digital Sisterhood Network’s Feminism Online Project was “rocked” by Shayne Lee, an African American male feminist, sociologist, Tulane University professor, and author of Erotic Revolutionaries: Black Women, Sexuality and Popular Culture. Shayne  dropped so much science on why he proudly claims the title “The Prince of 3rd Wave Feminism.”  He  discussed his infatuation with third wave feminism including his passion for reading Feministing.com, Rebecca Walker‘s To Be Real, and Jessica Valenti’s books.   He also provided commentary on what it means to be “feminist chic,” Black female sexuality, hip hop and feminism, Byron Hurt‘s article “Why I am a Male Feminist” on TheRoot.com, Latoya Peterson’s post “On Being Feminism’s Ms. Nigga” on Racialicious.com, the impact of social media and the Internet on feminism, the power of social media in his teaching, and his current book project.   Shayne announced he would be joining Twitter some time in 2011!  That was a first!

FYI – Shayne uses Facebook.  So check him out!

Feminism Online Project Goes to Haiti for A Discussion on Feminism

During my Heart of Haiti trip last weekend, I had an opportunity to introduce the Feminism Online Project to several digital sisters.  I also interviewed:

  • Nathalie Tancrede, co-founder of Fondation d’Ayiti Soleil, a Haitian organization that helps educate Haitian girls and women, and the Haiti Country Director for Fairwinds Trading; and
  • Danica Kombol,  Managing and Founding Partner at Everywhere, about feminism, digital sisterhood, and her reasons for being in Haiti.

See the videos below.

Please provide feedback for Feminism Online Project by February 1

The Digital Sisterhood Network is gearing up for the Feminism Online Project in March 2011. We need your help to make it successful. Please click here and complete the short survey (only two questions) by February 1, 2011. Thank you!

Feminism Online Project Description

Feminism is many things to many people. It lives out loud in the arts, environment, holistic health field, media, music, popular culture, and spirituality.  It is woven into the fabric of individuals’ beliefs and life practices.  It makes its home in diverse communities.  It explores its theories in the halls of academia.  It tests its application and elasticity in businesses, governments, and institutions.  It invites comment and critique wherever it goes. It seeks to bridge the gap between its first, second, third, fourth, and fifth waves.  It comes online and dances with complexity backed up by a rainbow chorus of voices, some of which go unheard.

In March 2011, The Digital Sisterhood Network will launch its Feminism Online Project to celebrate the rainbow chorus of feminist voices in the digital world.  The Feminism Online Project will use the Digital Sisterhood Network blog, Talkshoe.com radio show, Twitter page, and weekly Tweetchats to profile a diverse group of feminist voices and discuss a range of feminist issues.  The Project will also host several offline events to celebrate women’s art, creative writing, self-care practices, and financial empowerment in Washington, DC.  These activities will be included as research for author Ananda Leeke’s book Digital Sisterhood, a memoir (December 2011).

The Digital Sisterhood Network is using an excerpt from Leeke’s Digital Sisterhood, a memoir as its definition of feminism for the Feminism Online Project:

Feminism is a

F – Freedom of choice that encompasses a movement, practices, and beliefs that promote social, political, and economic equality and

E – Empower women, girls, men, and boys to

M – Move through their daily lives, the Internet, and society as

I – Individuals who are treated as equals and

N – Nurtured and respected for the diversity of their

I – Identities as human beings who

S – Share the responsibility of

M – Making their daily and digital lives, communities, organizations, businesses, governments, countries, and societies oppression-free zones.

A schedule of online and offline events will be posted in mid to late February.

Honoring the Memory of Three Haitian Feminist Leaders Who Died in 2010 Earthquake

Photo Credit: International Women's Health Coalition - http://www.flickr.com/photos/iwhc/4328112802

Today marks the first year anniversary of the Haitian earthquake.  Many of Haiti’s daughters and sons including three dynamic feminist leaders Myriam Merlet, Anne-Marie Coriolan, and Magalie Marcelin died as a result of this devastating event. See the photo and look in the background for the wall hanging displaying photos of the three feminist leaders (photo was taken on January 27, 2010 at The International Feminist Solidarity Camp held in the Dominican Republic).

Myriam Merlet served as the chief of staff of Haiti’s Ministry for Gender and the Rights of Women. She was also an author, activist, and founder of Enfofamn, an organization that raises awareness about women through media, collects stories and works to honor their names. She convinced author and playwright Eve Ensler to bring “The Vagina Monologues” play to Haiti.  Her efforts also established safe houses for women in Port-au-Prince and Cap Hatien.

Magalie Marcelin enjoyed a dynamic career as a lawyer, film and stage actress, and founder of  Kay Fanm, a women’s rights organization that addresses domestic violence and provides services, shelter, and microcredit loans to women.

Anne Marie Coriolan was as a top adviser to Haiti’s Ministry for Gender and the Rights of Women and founder of Solidarite Fanm Ayisyen (Solidarity with Haitian Women, or SOFA), an advocacy and services organization.

Today we are sending love and light to these three feminist leaders and the women of Haiti. May we all be inspired by their legacy of service!
