“CyberFeminists” — A Feminism Online Project Guest Blog Post by Rhonesha Byng, Founder of HerAgenda.com

85% of the PR industry is female, however 80% of the top management are men, according to a report, and reports further show the men’s salaries are higher.  Amongst the Fortune 500 companies, women CEOs run only 13 of them, and before 1996  a woman CEO was nonexistent.  The decision-making positions are a key area where women fail to be represented.

But as a 17 year old girl, attending a NABFEME meeting four years ago, the picture that those numbers paint weren’t on my radar.  I was blind to the reason why an organization called the National Association of Black Female Execs in Music and Entertainment was needed.  I was just excited that there was no age limit and in awe of being in a room full of amazing women who had in my eyes conquered the world.  They were entrepreneurs, and executives at record labels representing clients I’d only dreamed of knowing.  Hearing their stories made their path to success vivid and real.  The intimate feeling of the room made it seem as though they were my big sisters telling me– this is how I did it, and you can do it to — but when you do it make sure you take it to the next level.

Many young women do not have exposure to proper examples of power women to ever gain the capacity to dream big.  Just in time for Women’s History month, HerAgenda.com is highlighting the stories of inspirational women who make moves behind the scenes.  To start I am featuring a group of up and coming power women who embody the No one Ever Slows Her Agenda mentality.  This campaign simultaneously serves as a catalyst for a mini-fundraiser whose goal is to fund the launch of the new version of HerAgenda.com.

To push the agenda I joined forces with clothing company Triple L Society to create shirts branded with the motto to utilize in the campaign and sell to raise funds for the relaunch.  Stemming from the acronym N.E.S.H.A.–No one Ever Slows Her Agenda started out as my personal motto but now it’s my mission to universalize that motto to young women across the world.  To not let anyone or anything stand in the way of your goals is the message of the motto.  The resources are out there, and it’s up to you to find them and make your agenda a priority.

The presence of women in powerful positions continues to shock and awe, further solidifying women as the “other” when it comes to positions of power.  The next generation of women is shifting these attitudes.  Just as second wave feminists used the tools they found most effective during their time (protests, petitions, boycotting); a new generation of feminists dubbed by academics as “cyberfeminists” are taking advantage of the tool they believe can serve as a catalyst for change in the years to come: the Internet.

Utilizing such aids as mentorship, personal empowerment, and advances in cyberfeminist movements, women are mobilizing and empowering themselves to ultimately break down the patriarchal structures of society and claim their power.

I want to translate the intimate feeling I experienced at that NABFEME event years ago into an online space.  From this concept emerged the development of HerAgenda.com serving as a space to encourage young women to embrace the motto of No one Ever Slows Her Agenda and to utilize the inspirational real life journeys of power women to motivate and encourage users to not only dream big but do big.

Author Marita Golden on Feminism & Its Importance in African American Women’s Lives

I had the pleasure of interviewing author Marita Golden (one of my writing mentors) about feminism for the Digital Sisterhood Network’s Feminism Online Project.  We recorded the video after participating in the WOMANIFESTING in Action event held on March 19, 2011, at Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, DC.

What do you think about Marita’s views?

Recap of Digital Sisterhood Radio’s Feminism Online Project Interview with Professor Shayne Lee, “The Prince of 3rd Wave Feminism”

Last night the Digital Sisterhood Network’s Feminism Online Project was “rocked” by Shayne Lee, an African American male feminist, sociologist, Tulane University professor, and author of Erotic Revolutionaries: Black Women, Sexuality and Popular Culture. Shayne  dropped so much science on why he proudly claims the title “The Prince of 3rd Wave Feminism.”  He  discussed his infatuation with third wave feminism including his passion for reading Feministing.com, Rebecca Walker‘s To Be Real, and Jessica Valenti’s books.   He also provided commentary on what it means to be “feminist chic,” Black female sexuality, hip hop and feminism, Byron Hurt‘s article “Why I am a Male Feminist” on TheRoot.com, Latoya Peterson’s post “On Being Feminism’s Ms. Nigga” on Racialicious.com, the impact of social media and the Internet on feminism, the power of social media in his teaching, and his current book project.   Shayne announced he would be joining Twitter some time in 2011!  That was a first!

FYI – Shayne uses Facebook.  So check him out!
