The purpose of the giveaway is to raise awareness about the powerful work of KOFAVIV (Komisyon Fanm Viktim pou Viktim – Kreyol name of the organization; English translation – Commission of Women Victims for Victims), a nonprofit organization established in 2004 by Haitian women living in Port-au-Prince who were raped during the military dictatorship that lasted from 1991 to 1994.  KOFAVIV is dedicated to educating, empowering, and providing regular wages to women who are victims of gender-based violence.

The giveaway prize is a hand-hammered recycled steel heart pendant strung with wooden beads by the  women artisans of KOFAVIV.  The pendant was made from an oil drum by Atelier Haiti in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti.  The necklace is sold by Anthropologie through a collaboration between Atelier Haiti and Fairwinds Trading.

How Twitter Giveaway Works:

Digital Sisterhood will send a series of tweets about KOFAVIV that give links to articles and blog posts about the organization on June 30 between 8:00 am ET and 11:00 am ET.  The giveaway question will be tweeted at 11:00 am ET.  It will focus on some aspect of KOFAVIV that is mentioned in the articles and blog posts.  Women in social media will have between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm to tweet the correct answer.  The first woman who tweets the answer will win the giveaway prize.  The winner will need to provide her mailing address to receive the prize.  The prize will be mailed on July 1.

Story Behind the Twitter Giveaway:

Ananda Leeke, the Digital Sisterhood Network’s founder, traveled to Haiti as the Heart of Haiti ambassador with a group of women

KOFAVIV girls in February 2011

bloggers  led by Willa Shalit, CEO of Fairwinds Trading in February.  During the trip, the group visited KOFAVIV and met with women and girls who survived rape and violence.  The girls and women shared their stories and creative projects including clothing, wooden crafts, and jewelry made from an assortment of beads.  Before the group left KOFAVIV, Shalit promised to partner with the women and girls on developing an economic project that would support their jewelry making efforts.
