Podcasting represents a type of digital media that allows you to create audio content, organize it into an episodic series of audio files that can be subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer, lap top, netbook, tablet, or mobile device when it is convenient to the listener.

Podcasting is used to:

  • Generate conversations through storytelling, sharing information, and interviewing others.
  • Create, curate, and market content.
  • Advocate and promote causes and campaigns that promote social change, social good, social justice, and other issues.
  • Build and engage community.
  • Market and promote events, products, and services.
  • Develop thought leadership expertise and speaking skills.
  • Gather research and document best practices.

Podcasting entered Digital Sisterhood Network founder Ananda Leeke’s life as a content marketing strategy for her first novel, Love’s Troubadours – Karma: Book One in 2007. When Leeke held her first online book party for Love’s Troubadours on Myspace, she used her radio experience as a volunteer calendar reader for WPFW 89.3 FM to develop a podcast series with Gcast, a free mobile software application. Her podcasts featured excerpts from her novel, reflections about her writing process, and event notices about book readings and author talks. The more she recorded and posted podcasts with her cellphone to her author blog and member pages on various Ning.com social networking sites, the more connected and engaged she became with her audience. Through her active participation in Black Author Showcase social networking site, she learned about Talkshoe.com and BlogTalkRadio, web-based radio platforms, and was inspired to create two Talkshoe shows, BAP Living Radio and Go Green Sangha Radio, in 2008. That same year, she decided to strengthen her podcasting skills by attending Podcasting 101, a workshop taught by Fanshen Cox and Heidi Durrow, the founders of Mixed Chicks Chat, at the Blogging While Brown Conference. The workshop exposed Leeke to Utterli, a mobile micro-blogging tool that she began using to post weekly audio blogs about her creative adventures as an artist and an author. She also used Utterli to live blog and conduct interviews at events, meetups, and conferences. In 2009, she began using BlogTalkRadio and Cinchcast, a micro-blogging tool, to host author chats and to promote her book, That Which Awakens Me: A Creative Woman’s Poetic Memoir of Self-Discovery. She also launched Digital Sisterhood Radio to document the accomplishments of women in social media and to discuss feminism online. To date, Cinchcast has become her favorite podcasting tool to use with her smartphone as she live blogs and conducts interviews at conferences, events, and meetups. Visit Ananda Leeke Cinchcast – http://cinch.fm/anandaleeke and Digital Sisterhood Radio – http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/42015 (series will return in late 2012).

Are you ready to launch a podcast or Internet radio show? If yes, check out Leeke’s 14 tips for launching a podcast or Internet radio show below.

14 Tips for Launching a Podcast or Internet Radio Show

1) Listen to several podcasts and Internet radio shows to get an idea of how they are organized and hosted.

2) Take time to answer the why, what, how, who, and when podcasting questions.

  • Why do you want to launch a podcast?
  • What themes will your podcast focus on (general themes, episode themes, and guests)?
  • How will you host your podcast (podcasting platforms such as BlogTalkRadio, Cinch.fm, and Talkshoe.com)?
  • Who is your audience (gender, age, ethnicity, geographical location, lifestyle choices, profession etc.)?
  • When will you launch your podcast and how often will it air (5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 1 hour on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.)?

3) Create a name for your podcast that supports your brand (blog, web site, social media sites, book, products, and services).

4) Select a podcasting platform (i.e. BlogTalkRadio, Cinch.fm, and Talkshoe.com) that accommodates your schedule, finances, and technical skills.

5) Decide if your podcast will include audience participation with questions from a chat room, phone, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

6) Determine if you need a digital producer or assistant to help you manage the podcast (introduction, questions in chat room and from guests, live tweeting etc.). Select individuals who are reliable and are able to commit to your schedule.

7) Develop an episode schedule with themes, guests, and back up guests. Make sure your themes allow you to provide original content or present content in an original way.

8) Spend time making your podcasting site look visually stimulating with your logo or photo and a clear and concise description of the program’s themes, episodes, and guests.

9) Contact guests well in advance to schedule interviews. Use face-to-face meetings at events, a phone call, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, other social media sites, or email to make the initial contact. Follow up with an email that includes a brief introduction about your show (if they don’t know about it), detailed instructions on how to access the podcast, interview questions, additional information about other guests, your contact information, and a request for the guest’s contact information (web site, social media sites, and phone number). You may also want to ask the guest for a short bio (200 words or less) and a photo for promotion of the show in a blog post.

10) Promote your podcast on your web site, blog, video blog, and social media sites, and wherever your audience hangs out online. Schedule your notices in advance (post a full schedule in advance and monthly or weekly reminders).

11) Practice using your podcasting platform several times before your first show. Set up mock interviews with others to practice your interview and hosting skills. Record the shows and listen to them to learn how you can improve your skills. Ask others to listen to the recordings and provide feedback.

12) Know that your podcast will evolve over time. So be patient with yourself as you learn and grow.

13) Be yourself!

14) Have FUN!

Digital Sisterhood Leadership Project Profile: Dana Theus, Founder of InPower Women

Today I am giving you a Digital Sisterhood Leadership Project treat: a profile of my digital sister Dana Theus, founder of InPower Women.  I first met Dana at the BlogHer 2011 Conference held in San Diego, California.  After we chatted for a few minutes, I knew we were kindred spirits bonding over women in social media and women’s leadership.  That’s why I pulled out my digital camera and smartphone to do an interview with her.  Click here to listen to my  interview with Dana.

Dana is an amazing woman, wife, mother, and entrepreneur who uses her gifts, talents, and 25 years of expertise to serve companies as a leadership and management consultant.  She helps them establish gender-balanced leadership teams that improve business results.  She is also a thought leader in women’s leadership.  You must visit her YouTube channel and leadership blog, two of my favorite online destinations.  They promote her philosophy of “In”Powerment.  While you are visiting her blog, stop by the InPower.com website where you can read her numerous articles that are also featured and syndicated on Smartbrief on Leadership, Blogher, The Glass Hammer, Success in the City and Owning Pink.  Guess what? Dana is also a motivational speaker to women’s groups and an eCoach.

If you want to talk to Dana, tune into my May 1st interview with her on Digital Sisterhood Radio at 8:00 pm ET.  We will discuss her fantastic business, InPower Women and social media women’s leadership roles.  Click here to listen to the show.  If you miss the live show, you will be able to listen to a recording 15 to 30 minutes after it airs.  Look for the recording in the show’s archives (available 24/7/365).

Digital Sisterhood Month’s Guest Blogger Series – Ebony Utley

Ebony Utley

Meet Ebony Utley

1) Write a six-word memoir to describe yourself.

Ebony is the woman with ideas.

2) Tell us about your blog.

I started blogging in spring 2010 for Ms. Magazine. Since then I’ve also blogged for Religion Dispatches and Truthdig. I blog about popular culture, race, and romantic relationships. My all time favorite is a guest blog that I wrote for a friend’s site: Dear Nicki Minaj: An Open Letter – http://mghardie.wordpress.com/2010/11/22/dear-nicki-minaj-an-open-letter.

3) What is your definition of digital sisterhood?

I define digital sisterhood as the use of technology to create safer spaces for women to discuss and disseminate their ideas.

4) What is your favorite 2011 digital sisterhood moment or experience?

This really isn’t shameless self-promotion (although I have been known to do so), but my favorite digital sisterhood moment of 2011 was the Digital Sisterhood Radio interview with Ananda Leeke about (wait for it) digital sisterhood: http://recordings.talkshoe.com/TC-42015/TS-493916.mp3.  Although blogging is public, it’s essentially done alone. I write by myself at my computer, but having a chance to talk to another woman about my writing on women in front of an audience that I imagine was primarily women was super cool. Reading comments has its merits, but there’s nothing like a real time conversation to make the ideas come alive. I hope we will have more roundtables with more women on the air in 2012.

5) The 2011 theme of Digital Sisterhood Month is ‘Celebrate the 4 Fs of Women’s Health: Feelings, Food, Fitness & Fierce Living.” How have you lived fiercely in 2011?

I lived fiercely in 2011 by focusing on completing two of my major life goals. When I was 20, I decided that I wanted to write books and become a tenured professor. In 2011, I submitted the final manuscript for my book Rap and Religion: Understanding the Gangsta’s God [http://www.amazon.com/Rap-Religion-Understanding-Gangstas-God/dp/0313376689e] as well as my completed file for tenure. I did my part in making those dreams come true. Now I wait for the powers that be to take care of the rest. During this part of my life fierce living=focus.

6) How do you stay positive and maintain peace of mind?

I watch the Young and the Restless. I know. But I’ve been watching for 15 years, and I like being able to call my 88-year-old grandmother and talk about what Victor is doing now. I look forward to the running commentary on our Indiana University Gals Who Love Y&R Facebook page. The stories [soap operas] represent continuity, family, and community for me. I teach about them; I blog about them and try to help others see beyond the stereotypes into a woman centered world where the matriarch is celebrated. Popular culture rarely represents the diversity of femininity in the ways that the stories do. When my work is finished, for five hours a week, Y&R is my consistent escape. I’m enjoying it while I can before the last soap operas are no longer on the air.

7) What are your favorite healthy foods?

My favorite healthy food would have to be blueberries. I am obsessive about my super fruit. I freeze them when they’re about to be out of season so I can enjoy them all year. I also dig arugula and spinach salads.

8) How do you stay fit?

Staying fit is vital to my mental well-being. I can’t think without letting those endorphins escape, but I hate working out at a gym so I swear by pilates. I played tennis for years and I love biking by the ocean, but in 2011 I started practicing kundalini yoga and tai chi—both of which are excellent for centering and strengthening my core.

9) How are you planning to live fiercely in 2012?

I plan to live fiercely in 2012 by tackling new tasks that I think I will fail at accomplishing. It’s time for me to try things I’ve never done before and that I feel ill-prepared to execute. If failing is the worst that can happen, I am guaranteed to learn important life lessons, and living fiercely means embracing those lessons. I am musing on several promotional plans for Rap and Religion—all of which involve technology. And the woman with ideas also plans to blog about the role of religion not just in popular culture but also in politics just in time for the election year. Stay tuned. The best is yet to come.

Recap of Digital Sisterhood Radio’s Feminism Online Project Interview with Professor Shayne Lee, “The Prince of 3rd Wave Feminism”

Last night the Digital Sisterhood Network’s Feminism Online Project was “rocked” by Shayne Lee, an African American male feminist, sociologist, Tulane University professor, and author of Erotic Revolutionaries: Black Women, Sexuality and Popular Culture. Shayne  dropped so much science on why he proudly claims the title “The Prince of 3rd Wave Feminism.”  He  discussed his infatuation with third wave feminism including his passion for reading Feministing.com, Rebecca Walker‘s To Be Real, and Jessica Valenti’s books.   He also provided commentary on what it means to be “feminist chic,” Black female sexuality, hip hop and feminism, Byron Hurt‘s article “Why I am a Male Feminist” on TheRoot.com, Latoya Peterson’s post “On Being Feminism’s Ms. Nigga” on Racialicious.com, the impact of social media and the Internet on feminism, the power of social media in his teaching, and his current book project.   Shayne announced he would be joining Twitter some time in 2011!  That was a first!

FYI – Shayne uses Facebook.  So check him out!

Click here to listen to the show (55 minutes).
